Diabetes Education
Service Summary
The Diabetes Education Program has a Registered Dietitian and Registered Nurse who see both inpatients and outpatients, and works with your doctor to plan the best care for you. Services are for Type 1, Type 2, Gestational and Prediabetes clients. The program assists people and families with diabetes to learn about living well with diabetes.
Some of the services provided include:
- Assessment, clinical monitoring and management
- Weekly diabetes clinics with Dr. McLean, Endocrinologist
- Assistive Devices Program (ADP) certified offering insulin pump therapy
- Blood pressure and blood sugar checks
- Self-referrals are accepted
- Focus on prevention of complications and development of healthy lifestyle habits
- Individual counselling for nutrition, weight management, pre-diabetes, and diabetes
- Group education
- Provision of blood sugar meters and education on their use
Service Summary
The Registered Dietitian works in a team setting with the Nurse Diabetes Educator, to provide nutrition education to persons with diabetes and prediabetes. Our Dietitian also counsels persons to help optimize their nutrition intake for health issues such as; digestive disorders, celiac disease, lactose intolerance, allergies, childhood obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and healthy heart diets.
You may benefit from meeting with our Dietitian if you:
- Are interested in weight loss/ maintenance strategies
- Healthy meal planning on a budget, grocery shopping and label reading
- Manage high blood pressure and cholesterol
- Would like to increase weight and nutrition intake
- Would like to learn how to count carbs
- Would like to learn more about healthy eating and meeting your body’s vitamin & mineral needs

The AMGH Diabetes Program has been running for over 25 years and is one of the 8 Huron Perth Diabetes Centers.
