Community Profile
Goderich sits atop the scenic bluffs overlooking beautiful Lake Huron. The Town of Goderich, known nationwide as the “Prettiest Town in Canada,” has been named by Chatelaine Magazine as “One of the Ten Best Places to Live in Canada.” More recently, Goderich has been identified as “One of the 20 great places to live” by 50 Plus Magazine. Goderich has developed into a prosperous Lake Huron port and is considered to be one of the premier vacation spots in Southwestern Ontario.
With a population of 8,000, the town feeling is captured by its natural and historical beauty and also by the town’s citizens. Goderich’s natural setting along Ontario’s West Coast provides an incredible number of recreation and leisure choices. The Maitland Recreation Centre-YMCA offers an indoor swimming pool, hockey arena, state-of the-art exercise equipment, 2 gyms, walking track, etc. Goderich also offers swimming, fishing, water skiing, boating, scuba diving, hiking, cycling, golfing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, skating, hockey, theatre, arts and crafts galleries. Goderich is home of the Celtic Festival as well as other well known music festivals and performances, Livery Theatre, arts and crafts galleries.
The town has a thriving industry base which includes Sifto Salt Mine and is architecturally rich. The Goderich Airport is one of Ontario’s finest municipal airports. The local school systems include Public and Catholic elementary and high schools including French Immersion. Goderich makes shopping a great experience. The downtown square is heralded as being one of the most unique outdoor shopping malls. The Suncoast Mall offers many stores under one roof with a bright and comfortable atmosphere. Goderich is close to major shopping centres in London (1 hour), Stratford (45 minutes) and Kitchener (1 1/2 hours).

Member Biographies
Lynn Bearden
Lynn and her husband, along with their two golden retrievers, moved to Goderich 15 years ago from Toronto. Lynn worked at the University of Toronto for 27 years, taking early retirement from her position of Executive Assistant in the central library.
Lynn joined both the hospital Auxiliary where her mother had been a member for many years, and the IODE. She met a wonderful group of women dedicated to volunteering in the hospital and raising money for equipment for patient care. With the IODE the focus was on raising money to assist women, children and those in need in the community as well as donating to the hospital. In fact, Lynn learned an earlier chapter of IODE in Goderich raised money for the first hospital in Goderich, which subsequently resulted in a hospital Auxiliary being formed. As a member of the Auxiliary, Lynn became President, sat on the Hospital Board, and was asked to be secretary of the regional Ontario Hospital Auxiliary Association.
Lynn volunteers in various areas of the hospital such as Speech Language Therapy Department, Dialysis, the gift shop and portering in the Emergency Department. She has served on the executive of the IODE.
Lynn also volunteers at the MacKay Centre for Seniors and is a past board member of the Reuben Sallows Gallery. She volunteered to be the auxiliary representative on the Community Advisory Committee because she sees it as a continuation of her desire to contribute to the community and the hospital.
David Greer
David grew up in Goderich before moving to the Toronto Area and becoming an Ontario Provincial Police Officer. In 2013 David and his wife became the parents of a little girl named Everly, and in 2018 they welcomed twin boys Cullen and Deacon. In 2015 David and his family moved back to Huron County to be closer to their extended families.
As a member of the Huron OPP, David has held several community-focused positions. This included Constable, Community Mobilization/Mental Health Coordinator, and Detective Constable. As the Community Mobilization/Mental Health Officer he worked with many community members and local support agencies including Victim Services, local Hospitals & Schools and CMHA. David is currently serving as a Detective within the Huron County Crime Unit.
David accepted a position on the AMGH Community Advisory Committee to continue working with the community and to ensure that local residents preserve their high level of services. During 2018 David became the Chairperson for the Community Advisory Committee. David also serves as a Platoon Captain with the Huron County Search and Rescue (HASAR).
Matt Hoy
Matt has been a long time resident of Goderich and area. He is currently the Executive Director of the Maitland Valley Family Health Team. The Maitland Valley Family Health team is the second largest Health Team in the South West Local Heath Integration Network, boasting 15 physicians and a large number of professional health providers to serve the needs of Goderich and area.
Matt has a history of community service with the area, including Chair of the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital Foundation during the CT Scan and Digital Imaging Project for Huron County, and Co-Chair of Community Fundraising as a result of the Goderich Tornado.
Matt has previously been the Executive Director of a conservation agency and spent a number of years in the financial industry. He is the proud father of Alexander and Abigale.
He is currently a Municipal Council member for the Town of Goderich and sits on a number of community boards.
Don Scott
Don resides in Goderich with his wife, Karen Scott, who is a member of the AMGH Hospital Auxiliary and volunteers in the Gift Shop. Don and Karen have two children.
Don is a retired Professional Engineer and has held positions at the Sifto Salt Evaporator Plant, Honeywell-FRAM and Veolia Water.
Don’s volunteer work includes a Board of Director position for the Goderich Community Credit Union, and coaching softball / baseball as our kids were involved. Don joined the Community Advisory Committee with an interest in the operation and workings of the Ontario Health Care system, and currently has the time and opportunity to contribute to the community that he has lived in for over 45 years.
Stan Z. Spacek
Stan has lived in Goderich for nearly 12 years, moving here from Moose Factory, where, for 2.5 years, he had his first medical practice. He spent his youth in Ottawa, obtained his medical degree there and completed residency in Family Medicine with Emergency Medicine at Queen’s University.
Stan has been happily married for 17 years, and he is a father of two children.
Stan’s medical practice is comprehensive and includes work at the Alexandra Marine & General Hospital, Maitland Valley Medical Clinic and the Maitland Manor. He has academic appointments with University of Toronto and Queens’ University as an Assistant Professor. He has been teaching physicians from these universities for over a decade. He has been the President of the Huron County Medical Society and a Delegate representing Huron County at the Ontario Medical Association since 2008. Stan has held numerous administrative positions over the years, currently serving on the Credentialing, and Recruitment and Retention Committees at the Hospital, as well as the President and Board Chair of the Maitland Valley Family Health Team at the Clinic.
Stan volunteered for the Community Advisory Committee as a physician representative.
